What is a fixed index annuity?

A fixed index annuity is a deferred annuity that derives it's interest crediting from a market index, such as the S&P 500. The money in this type of annuity is not directly invested in the stock market, therefore your original balance as well as any interest credited can never be lost because of a market downturn. However, this safety feature also limits the amount of upside potential your account receives if the market goes up. Be aware of surrender charges and potential fees for optional benefits such as income riders.
